Three Car Myths Debunked

If you own a vehicle, you’ve likely heard all kinds of repair and maintenance recommendations over the years. But how do you know which things are correct, and which things you should avoid? Before you take your vehicle to your local mechanic for any kind of service, check out these common vehicle myths. They can help you clear the air so you know what to expect the next time your car needs attention.

Flush Your Transmission Fluid

Many mechanics will recommend that you have your transmission fluid changed and flushed every 50,000 miles. But most drivers might not need this service quite that frequently. Many newer makes and models use a special “long-life” transmission fluid. This fluid is made to last for around 100,000 miles and in some cases, for the entire life of your vehicle. Of course, no two vehicles are alike so you should read your owner’s manual to find out what your unique recommendations are.

Use your AC Instead of Opening Windows for Good Fuel Economy

The level of fuel economy you get really depends on your vehicle. Some drivers believe that if you open your windows to keep cool, it reduces drag which gives you lower fuel economy. However, that’s not always the case and even when you roll the windows down and drive 65 mph, it may not make much of a difference. On the other hand, if you constantly use your AC, it could actually reduce your overall fuel economy from one to four miles per gallon. The verdict? Use whichever method you prefer to keep cool.

Use High-Octane Fuel for Better Performance

The more expensive fuel promises better engine performance, but that’s not always the case. Unless your particular make and model requires premium fuel, you can likely skip it at the pump. Lower octane fuel does just as well in terms of overall performance and filling your tank with a higher grade is really not worth the higher price tag in most cases. Another gasoline myth? Some say that filling up in the morning will save you money because gasoline expands with heat and cooler air would keep it dense. This is actually a myth since gasoline is stored underground and stays insulated against big temperature swings.
