Times When it’s Better to Replace a Vehicle’s Engine Than to Rebuild It

There are times when rebuilding a vehicle’s engine isn’t going to repair it effectively and you’ll have to drop a new engine into your automobile. Depending on the age of the vehicle and its value to you, personally, a new engine could be a wise investment that keeps you behind the wheel of your dream car. CAR FIX Crossville recommends that you consider a new engine under the following circumstances.

Auto Accident

If you were in a severe automobile accident, the engine damage resulting from the collision may be irreparable. Usually, insurance companies total cars when there is severe engine damage, but if you love your automobile, you can buy it back from the insurance company and have a new engine put in it. Keep in mind, however, that your vehicle is never the same after a severe crash.

Cracked Engine Block

The most common thing that cracks an engine block is overheating. Anytime your engine overheats and all attempts at repairing the cooling system don’t resolve the problem, you’re going to likely end up with damage beyond repair, including a cracked engine block or a blown head gasket or exhaust manifold. In some cases, the engine can be rebuilt, but usually, it must be replaced.

Improper Detonation

Your vehicle’s engine is a combustion engine, and problems in the combustion chamber can also crack your engine block. If the engine’s detonation is producing too much heat and pressure, it can also destroy interior engine parts, such as the cylinders, valves, and pistons, and damage the exhaust system. Improper detonation also causes the engine to misfire and stall.

Poor or No Lubrication

Failing to change your motor oil regularly will destroy your engine, and this is a common reason why we have to replace engines. Dirty oil or oil starvation prevents engine parts from being lubricated, which overheats them and damages them beyond repair. The bearings and rods will literally seize up. Metal shavings in motor oil is a sign that the engine is damaged beyond repair.

Wear and Tear

If you drive a high-mileage vehicle, your engine is slowly succumbing to its age. Over the years, friction and heat wear down engine parts even if you are faithful about oil changes and other preventative maintenance. Gaskets blow, rings break, and seals leak, causing severe trouble such as oil, cooling system, exhaust, and transmission leaks. Sometimes, the engine is just too old.
