What Happens When the Water Pump Needs to Be Replaced?

To let you know what you can expect, J&R Automotive – CAR FIX Crossville – is going to list the signs of a faulty water pump below. You may not realize there’s a problem until your automobile starts to overheat. If you drive a vehicle that has plenty of miles and years under the hood, the water pump will go bad eventually. When it does, you will notice one or more of the following things.

Corroded Pump

If you do drive an older automobile, pop the hood when the engine is cold and locate the water pump. You can use the schematic in your owner’s manual to find it. Take a good look at the pump to make sure it is not corroded. If it is, the water pump is leaking coolant slowly that is puddling around the pump and causing the corrosion. Unfortunately, the corrosion will eat through the water pump’s metal.

Leaking Coolant

Unfortunately, when this happens, coolant starts to leak out of the engine via the water pump. This will naturally reduce the level of coolant in the engine and you will notice temperature changes while you are driving. If your engine is running hotter than normal, head straight to our shop so we can replace the leaking water pump. If the engine is overheating, call for a tow truck.

Poor Circulation

The coolant is circulated through the engine by the water pump to reduce the engine’s temperature. If the engine’s temperature rises above 220 degrees Fahrenheit, it is overheating. Unfortunately, as the water pump ages, it may start to have trouble circulating the coolant through the engine. You need the engine coolant circulating at a normal pressure all the time so the engine doesn’t overheat.

Growling Noises

The water pump may also start to make noise if it is going bad. The most common sound it will make is a growling noise. This may also sound like grinding. If you hear growling coming from the front of your engine, it is most likely the water pump that is making this noise.

Overheating

Finally, your engine is going to overheat if the water pump is leaking or malfunctioning. Simply put, the engine’s temperature will rise because it does not have enough coolant circulating through it. If you continue to drive your automobile with a hot engine, you could cause unnecessary damage.
