Why Do I Smell Burning Wires in My Car’s Engine?

Don’t drive your car, truck, or C/SUV if you smell burning wires coming from the engine. This can be an indication that the electrical system is being overloaded by a faulty alternator. The maximum voltage an alternator should produce is 14.5 volts. If it is producing more than that, you may end up with an electrical fire. CAR FIX in Crossville can replace your faulty alternator. Aside from the smell of burning wires and rubber, you may also notice one or more of the following signs of a malfunctioning alternator.

Dashboard Warning

You might end up with a dashboard warning that the alternator is struggling to produce voltage. A battery-shaped or ALT or GEN light will turn on and stay on until the alternator is replaced.

Dim/Overly Bright Lights

You may realize that the alternator is going bad because it has suddenly become hard to see at night. If your vehicle’s lights are dim or flickering, the alternator may be unable to supply enough power to them. They can also be overly bright if the alternator is producing too much electricity.

Frequent Engine Stalling

The alternator also powers the spark plugs so they can generate a spark for engine combustion. If the plugs are not getting the power they need, your engine will misfire. In severe cases, the engine will stall frequently when you try to drive your car, truck, or utility vehicle.

Growling/Whining Noises

Growling noises coming from the engine can be an indication that the alternator is wearing down on the inside. If you hear whining sounds, the alternator belt may be too loose. Sometimes, tightening the belt is all that is needed to resolve the issues of a malfunctioning alternator.

Hard Starts/Dead Battery

A dying alternator can also make it difficult to start your automobile. If the alternator has died completely and is no longer charging the battery, you will end up with a dead battery and engine. Replacing the alternator will restore the battery’s charge.

Malfunctioning Accessories

Finally, accessories that have slowed down or are malfunctioning point to power loss from the alternator. For example, your radio may start turning off unexpectedly or the power seats and windows may slow down to the point of being nearly non-operational.
